Why Raleigh Homeowners Choose Index Fence
3 Rails, Select #1 Wood, and a Stock Room You Can Walk Through

Most fence companies in the Triangle will not tell you what grade of lumber goes into your fence. We will. Every wood fence we build uses Select #1 A-Grade premium pressure-treated lumber, the highest residential grade available. Competitors in this market regularly use Select #2, which costs less, warps faster, and shows knots within the first season.
We were the first company in the area to use Alta Pickets, a premium wood picket backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty. That warranty covers what standard pressure-treated lumber cannot: long-term resistance to the rot, splitting, and warping that Raleigh’s humidity accelerates.
Our vinyl is virgin vinyl, manufactured entirely in the USA. No recycled fillers. No overseas materials. Virgin vinyl holds its color, resists UV breakdown, and carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty. Aluminum and chain link carry lifetime manufacturer warranties as well.
You do not have to take our word for any of this. Our stock room at 4901 Craftsman Dr is open to anyone during business hours, no appointment required. Walk in, pick up the lumber, feel the vinyl panels, and compare them to what other contractors are quoting you. Most of our customers make their decision after that visit.

Expert Save:Â Raleigh sits on Piedmont red clay, a dense soil that holds moisture against fence posts and accelerates rot in untreated or under-graded wood. That trapped moisture is why fences built with Select #2 lumber in this area often start leaning within three to four years. We use Select #1 A-Grade with 80 to 100 pounds of concrete per post and set every post 24 inches deep, well beyond the 12-inch minimum that NC building code requires. The clay gives us excellent lateral support once the footing cures, so the fence stays plumb through wet winters and summer storms.
What we do
Residential and Commercial Fence Installation
Index Fence installs wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link fences across Raleigh and the Triangle.

Vinyl Fence Installation
The most popular choice for Raleigh homeowners who want privacy without ongoing maintenance. Our virgin vinyl panels are manufactured in the USA with through-body color that never needs painting. Every 6-foot vinyl privacy fence gets 3 rails and posts set in 80 to 100 pounds of concrete. Lifetime manufacturer warranty included.
Best for: Privacy fencing, backyard enclosures, and HOA-compliant installations.

Wood Fence Installation
Built with Select #1 A-Grade premium pressure-treated lumber and Alta Pickets, our wood fences resist the warping, splitting, and rot that lower-grade lumber develops in this climate. We recommend waiting 6 to 12 months before staining to let the wood dry properly.
Best for: Traditional privacy fencing, custom designs, and properties where natural appearance matters.

Aluminum Fence Installation
Powder-coated aluminum with a lifetime manufacturer warranty. We install both flat-top and spear-top styles, and we check your HOA’s architectural guidelines before recommending a style. Aluminum works for front yards, pool enclosures, and properties where visibility matters more than total privacy.
Best for: Pool fencing, front yard boundaries, and decorative perimeter fencing.

Chain Link Fence Installation
Galvanized chain link with 11-gauge residential wire standard. We offer vinyl-coated options in multiple colors for a cleaner look. Chain link is the right call when you need a secure boundary for pets or a large property without the cost of a full privacy fence.
Best for: Pet containment, large lots, and commercial or utility applications.
We also install these fence styles across the Raleigh area:
- Semi-privacy vinyl fencing
- Lattice-top vinyl panels
- Board-on-board wood fencing
- Shadowbox wood fencing
- Stockade fencing
- Spaced picket fencing
- Spear-top and curved-top aluminum
- Vinyl-coated chain link
- Slatted privacy chain link
- Security chain link fencing

Frequently asked questions about fence installation in Raleigh
What areas does Index Fence serve?
We serve Raleigh and the surrounding Triangle area, including Cary, Apex, Knightdale, Wendell, Wake Forest, Fuquay-Varina, Youngsville, and more. Most of our work is in Raleigh and Wake County, but we take projects throughout the Triangle. Check our service area page for the full list.
How does the free consultation work?
We come to your property, walk the yard with you, and provide a written quote the same visit. The consultation takes about 10 minutes. There is no deposit and no obligation. You can also visit our stock room at 4901 Craftsman Dr to see and touch every material before making a decision.
How long does fence installation take in Raleigh?
Most residential fence installations are completed in 1 to 2 days once permits are approved. The permit review process through the City of Raleigh takes 1 to 2 weeks for straightforward projects. Complex situations involving creeks, sewer easements, or tree protection zones can take a month or longer. From when you sign a contract with us to when we can be on your property starting the install is almost always regulated by the permit processing time. Our team is ready to perform.
How much does a new fence cost in Raleigh?
The cost of a new fence depends on the material, linear footage, terrain, and gate configuration. We do not publish pricing because every property is different, but our consultations are free and include a written quote with no hidden fees. Financing is available for all credit scores.
What makes Index Fence’s materials different from other contractors?
We only use Select #1 A-Grade premium pressure-treated wood, while most competitors use Select #2 grade. All our vinyl is virgin vinyl manufactured in the USA. We were the first company in the area to use Alta Pickets, which carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty. You can visit our stock room and compare our materials to what other companies are quoting.
What warranties does Index Fence offer?
We provide a 2-year workmanship warranty on all fence installations, with a 1-year workmanship warranty on wood due to the impact of severe weather events in the Raleigh area. Material warranties vary: vinyl, aluminum, and chain link carry lifetime manufacturer warranties. Wood fences built with Alta Pickets include a 10-year limited manufacturer warranty.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Raleigh, NC?
Yes. The City of Raleigh requires a zoning permit for any new fence installation. The permit costs $264 and requires a site survey and diagram of the proposed fence. We prepare your permit application for free as part of every quote, so you do not need to handle the paperwork yourself. If your home is in a historic district, you will also need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission. Per the City of Raleigh permit requirements
